Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things

After Preaching the Lord’s Prayer(주기도를 통해 우리가 바로 구하고, 바로 살게되기를) by REV. HOJISHIN
From February 21st, we have meditated the Lord’s Prayer which Jesus taught and searched true meaning of it through 9 weeks.
The Lord’s Prayer itself is a perfect prayer which can be prayed alone, but by meditating on and understanding each phrase, we were able to pray with more extensiveness. So far, we have learned that:
Jesus called God “Dad” rather than “Father,” and also taught and encouraged us to do the same. This means that we have an intimate and close relationship with God.
We have also learned the order in which we should arrange our petitions to God. Before praying for ourselves, we must first pray for God.
Hallowed be your name. Dear God, as the Creator, receive all praise, honor, and glory you are worthy of.
Your Kingdom come. Recover this world so it may become your beautiful and orderly Kingdom. Let the new Heaven and new earth, which is to come with the second coming of Christ Jesus, come now.
Let your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. When your will is to be done, use me, Lord. Give us today our daily bread. We are grateful for enough food to live.
Give us the power to feed ones who are hungry and clothe ones who are naked. Forgive us our debts. Help us to uproot our faults completely.
Forgive the sins of what we have done, which have ruined your beautiful world.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Give us spiritual strength to not fall into temptation. Protect us from the evil one.
I hope that we could ask correctly and live better through the Lord’s Prayer.

Tongues for Mission(선교를 위한 방언) by REV. HOJISHIN
In Acts 2, there is a memorable moment of Pentecost recorded. God promised to give us the Holy Spirit first. So Jesus told his disciples to stay within Jerusalem and to await the promised Spirit. The disciples gathered in Mark’s upper room to pray. When the Feast of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Without warning there came a gale-force wind. It filled the whole house. Then, like a wildfire, the Holy Spirit spread through their ranks, and they started speaking in a number of different languages as the Spirit prompted them. They saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there.
Even now, when we Christians pray, the Holy Spirit gives us the gift of tongue. So when people pray together, we may hear one another praying in tongue. In revivals and other events, people often ask to place pastor’s hand on their head in order to receive tongues.
The tongues that the disciples were given were completely foreign languages. There were many Jews staying in Jerusalem just then, devout pilgrims from all over the world. When they heard them praying, they ran to see. Then when they witnessed, one after another, their own mother tongues being spoken, they were thunderstruck. “They’re speaking our languages, describing God’s mighty works!”
The tongues spoken by the disciples were of “God’s mighty works.” This is the most important point in knowing the reason why God gave them tongues. It was to facilitate missionary work. Languages were separated and caused ‘interruption’ since the event of the tower of Babel, but there was ‘communication’ thanks to the Pentecost. Do not demand tongues to own a gift simply, but for mission.

[Mother’s Day] 디아스포라 Diaspora(διασπορά) by REV. HOJISHIN
“Diaspora” is the Greek word meaning “to spread, or disperse.” It indicates a race or a mass of people, willingly or unwillingly, leaving their homeland for another country or area. Especially, Jews who were expelled and dispersed to all around world are referred to as Diaspora Jews.
Today, there are numerous people who have moved away for a better life thanks to the development of transportation; therefore, “diaspora” does not refer only to Jewish people, but to these people as well. For this reason, many Koreans can be seen around the world.
There are many Diaspora Koreans. In 2013, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported at least 2 million people living in China and in the United States, 900K in Japan, 200K in Canada, 170K each in Russia, Uzbekistan, and Australia, 80K in the Philippines and Vietnam, and many more in Brazil, United Kingdom, etc. In total, Koreans live in 30 different countries, but probably in more places as well.
In the region today where the Soviet Union used to exist, a Diaspora Korean is called a “Koryoin,” or in Russian, “Koreyskiy.” Originally, they were referred to as “Chosunin,” but because of the distinction between North Koreans and South Koreans, they are currently called “Koryoin.” After the war between Russia and Japan, Koreans in Russia faced rejection, were confiscated of their farms, fired from their jobs, and were forced to migrate. On the other hand, Koreans in Vladivostok accepted Christianity and adapted well to Russian culture.
Diaspora’s biggest advantage is biculturalism. 100% of Korean culture combines with 100% of the residence culture, creating a 200% adventage. Around the world, we can see the providence of God being done through 2nd and 3rd generation Diaspora Koreans, who are spreading the Gospel with much passion and dedication of Korean.

The Trinity(삼위일체) by REV. HOJISHIN
“Trinity” is one of the most important confessions of faith to us Christians. “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are the Trinity. This [expression, term, concept, or word] was developed as questions like, “Who is Jesus, and who is the Holy Spirit” were asked and answered continuously.
The doctrine of the Trinity originated in 325 A.D. at the Council of Nicaea and amended in 451 A.D. at the Council of Chalcedon. The Cappadocian School claimed that the Holy Spirit and Jesus are equal to God, and are the same as God, while the Macedonian School claimed that the Holy Spirit is not a divine character but energy, power, or a moral influence. There was a dispute within the schools, and the Cappadocian claim was chosen eventually. When the scholars created the confession of Trinity, their goal was not to dogmatize, but to vivify Christian lives.
Jehovah's Witnesses, one of the Christian heresies, insist that “the exact word ‘Trinity’ is not found in the Bible.” Of course, the term “Trinity” does not exist in the Bible. However, the concept and relationship of “Trinity” can definitely be found in the Bible.
The Trinity confessed during times of the Early Church are: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are equal. The Father is who exists eternally by Himself, the Son is eternally existing by birth, and the Holy Spirit is eternally the one who has come out of. The Spirit, like the Father and Son, receives prayers, and the object of our faith. Jesus Christ, the Spirit, and the Father are in equal places, and are God himself, who has their equivalent nature. Jesus Christ is our Redeemer, God is the Creator, and the Holy Spirit is the Sanctifier, as well as life giver who helps us to complete salvation. Jesus, like us, is completely human, is also God, who does possess guilt of sin, and is eternal. The Spirit receives praise and worship, and the being who helps us to worship, to praise, and to prayer in Spirit and in truth.

After Preaching the Lord’s Prayer by REV.

John Wesley’s Conversion(존 웨슬리의 회심) by REV. HOJISHIN
The Methodist founder Rev. John Wesley was miserable after failure of his mission to America. If anyone should have been confident about their “religion” it was Wesley. After all, he had been a missionary to the Indians; he was an Anglican priest; he had done open air evangelism; he had been involved in prison ministry. He was an Oxford scholar. His personal spiritual habits included reading the Bible and regular prayer. He was sensitive to sin and tried to do what was right and holy.
However, none of these activities or positions had given him peace about his own destiny. Was he right with God? Was he saved? Was he going to heaven? All of these questions plagued him.
He had spent considerable time praying, studying the Bible and reading various books during his dilemma. He had sought counsel from other preachers and friends. All to no avail.
On a now historic night he was invited to a meeting where all of this changed: On Wednesday evening, May 24 in 1738, John Wesly reluctantly attended a meeting in Aldersgate. Someone read from Luther’s Preface to the Epistle to Romans. About 8:45 p.m. “while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.”
After this night Wesley’s doubts faded. He had peace about his destiny and salvation. Although he might have experienced some doubt’s later, his writing and speaking was never again full of agony about this issue.
Notice from his own words what brought this peace, “…I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for my salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins,…” It was faith in Christ that brought an end to Wesley’s doubts.

From Baltimore to Baltimore
Last week, at Lovely Lane United Methodist Church in Baltimore, the 24th Korean Methodist Church of the Americas Annual Conference was held. Leaders of 360 churches from the United States, Canada, and countries in South America gathered. The conference was directed in grace by Bishop. Rev. Yong-Jae Jeon, head of the Korean Methodist Church.
This year’s subject was entitled “From Baltimore to Baltimore.” Lovely Lane Church is the birthplace of the United Methodist Church(UMC). 232 years ago, in 1784, John Wesley and 60 preachers gathered with faith and vision to establish the Methodist Church in America. Last week, we, the descendants of them, gathered together in the same place.
Lovely Lane UMC not only founded Methodism in the United States, but in Korea as well. 133 years ago, in 1883, John Goucher, the senior pastor, met 11 people of diplomatic delegation from Chosun(old Korea) on a coast-tocoast train. They were sent under the order of Emperor Gojong. During three days in the train, Rev. Goucher got along with them and confirmed the need of Christian mission to the unheard land of “Chosun” and answer for Asian mission. He invited them and treated them at his house. Rev. Goucher and his wife sent $2,000 as a seed offering to the Methodist Foreign Ministry Department for the mission to Chosun, and also sent an additional $3,000. Hope became visible for evangelism in Chosun. Two years later, on Easter morning, April 5th, of 1885, the history of Methodism in Korea began when Methodist missionary Henry Appenzeller set foot on Jemulpo Harbor, Incheon.
As 129 years passed, around 6,575 Methodist churches have been established, and 821,842 members confirmed, and the biggest Methodist church ranked in Seoul. Bishop Matthews’ and pastor of the Lovely Lane church, Rev. Knoll’s greeting touched my heart;
"Today,
you have returned in the place
where Methodism was birth in 1784.
