In Acts 2, there is a memorable moment of Pentecost recorded. God promised to give us the Holy Spirit first. So Jesus told his disciples to stay within Jerusalem and to await the promised Spirit. The disciples gathered in Mark’s upper room to pray. When the Feast of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Without warning there came a gale-force wind. It filled the whole house. Then, like a wildfire, the Holy Spirit spread through their ranks, and they started speaking in a number of different languages as the Spirit prompted them. They saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there.
Even now, when we Christians pray, the Holy Spirit gives us the gift of tongue. So when people pray together, we may hear one another praying in tongue. In revivals and other events, people often ask to place pastor’s hand on their head in order to receive tongues.
The tongues that the disciples were given were completely foreign languages. There were many Jews staying in Jerusalem just then, devout pilgrims from all over the world. When they heard them praying, they ran to see. Then when they witnessed, one after another, their own mother tongues being spoken, they were thunderstruck. “They’re speaking our languages, describing God’s mighty works!”
The tongues spoken by the disciples were of “God’s mighty works.” This is the most important point in knowing the reason why God gave them tongues. It was to facilitate missionary work. Languages were separated and caused ‘interruption’ since the event of the tower of Babel, but there was ‘communication’ thanks to the Pentecost. Do not demand tongues to own a gift simply, but for mission.

사도행전 2장에는 인상적인 성령 강림이 묘사되 어 있습니다. 성령은 하나님께서 먼저 주시겠다고 약 속하셨습니다. 그래서 예수님께서는 사도들에게 예 루살렘을 떠나지 말고 약속하신 성령을 기다리라고 분부하셨습니다. 사도들은 마가의 다락방에 모여서 기도하기 시작합니다. 열흘즈음 지났을까, 오순절이 되었을 때, 사도들이 한 곳에 모여 있었고, 난데없이 맹렬한 기세의 강한 바람 소리가 났고, 그 소리는 온 집을 가득 채웠습니다. 그러더니 성령께서 들불처럼 무리 사이로 퍼졌습니다. 불길이 솟아오를 때 혓바닥 처럼 갈라지는 것 같은 혀들로 묘사된 성령께서 임하 자, 사도들은 방언을 말하기 시작했습니다.
오늘날에도 그리스도인들이 기도할 때, 성령께서 방언의 은사를 주십니다. 그래서 함께 기도할 때, 방 언으로 기도하는 이들의 기도소리를 종종 들을 때가 있습니다. 또한 부흥회 등에서 방언을 받도록 안수기 도하는 경우도 있었습니다.
그런데 사도들이 받은 방언은 완전한 외국어습 니다. 마침 그 때에는 예루살렘에 세계 각지에서 모 인 순례자들이 많이 있었습니다. 그들이 제자들의 방 언소리를 듣고 모여들었습니다. 그런데 그들이 각자 의 모국어로 들려오는 소리를 듣고 크게 놀라게 됩니 다. 그리고 그들이 놀라면서 “이들이 우리 언어로 하 나님의 큰 일들을 말하는 것을 듣고 있소!” 라고 말 합니다.
사도들이 말한 방언은 ‘하나님의 놀라운 일들’이 었습니다. 하나님께서 사도들에게 방언을 주신 목적 을 알 수 있는 대목입니다. 바로 선교를 원활하게 하 기 위함입니다. 바벨탑사건으로 언어가 흩어져 ‘불통’ 이 되었는데, 성령강림절 방언으로 ‘소통’하게 된 것 입니다. 개인의 성을 위해 방언을 구하지 말고, 선 교를 위해 방언을 구해야 하겠습니다.
